A Guide to the Happy Slam
The Australian Open, affectionately known as the "Happy Slam," is set to begin on Sunday, January 12th, 2025. This year's tournament promises excitement with returning and rising stars, notable absences, and a strong Australian contender in Alex de Minaur.
The main draw runs from January 12th to January 26th, with the men's final concluding the event. Gates open at 10am AEDT for the morning session and 5pm AEDT for the evening session.
The tournament takes place at Melbourne Park across 39 courts, including the iconic Rod Laver Arena, the "people's court" John Cain Arena, and Margaret Court Arena.
The women's final is scheduled for Saturday, January 25th, while the men's final will be held on Sunday, January 26th. The singles champions will each earn $3.5 million, with runner-ups receiving $1.9 million and semifinalists $1.1 million.
In the women's draw, Aryna Sabalenka, the two-time defending champion, will be the player to beat. Other contenders include Iga Świątek, Coco Gauff, Jasmine Paolini, and Zheng Qinwen.
The men's draw features defending champion Jannik Sinner, along with Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz, Daniil Medvedev, and Casper Ruud. Novak Djokovic, despite not being seeded, remains a threat.
Alexei Popyrin, Jordan Thompson, and Alex de Minaur. Nick Kyrgios' participation remains uncertain due to an abdominal strain.
On the women's side, Olivia Gadecki earned a spot in the main draw, along with five wildcards. Two additional Australian women qualified through the qualifying rounds.
Channel 9 will broadcast the tournament on its streaming service 9NOW and Stan Sport. ABC Grandstand will provide radio coverage, and ABC Sport digital will offer live blogs and updates.
