According to a senior US official, North Korea is gaining substantial benefits and military experience from its troops participating alongside Russian forces in the ongoing war against Ukraine. The formal ties between Russia and North Korea have strengthened following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with over 12,000 North Korean troops now reported to be fighting in Russia's Kursk region.
The deputy US ambassador to the UN, Dorothy Camille Shea, highlighted that North Korea is acquiring Russian military equipment, technology, and experience, which enhances its ability to conduct military operations against other nations. She expressed concern that North Korea might exploit these advancements to expand its global arms sales and military training activities, particularly following recent missile tests that Pyongyang claims are aimed at fortifying its defense capabilities.
In response to the missile test, North Korea's UN ambassador, Kim Song, accused the United States of applying double standards regarding self-defense rights, particularly in light of the civilian toll in other conflicts like Gaza. Meanwhile, Russia's UN ambassador dismissed US allegations regarding military collaboration with North Korea as baseless and emphasized that military exercises conducted by the US and its allies provoke tensions with North Korea.
South Korea's UN ambassador characterized North Korean soldiers as being manipulated and exploited by their leadership for the regime's benefit, highlighting the conditions under which they operate in international conflicts. Despite ongoing UN sanctions aimed at curbing North Korea's nuclear ambitions, the influence of Russia complicates any potential responses from the UN Security Council.
