The Ministry of Water Resources has confirmed that there are no safety hazards in natural and man-made water bodies near the epicenter of the 6.8-magnitude earthquake in Dingri county of Shigatse in the Xizang autonomous region.
Following the earthquake, the ministry activated a Level Ⅳ emergency response and conducted screening operations to assess water bodies and water management facilities in the vicinity of the epicenter. Expert officials were deployed to comb through areas where secondary disasters may occur, and satellite remote sensing images were used to analyze potential adverse effects.
Within a 50-kilometer radius of the epicenter, there are five small reservoirs and five small hydropower stations. No collapse has occurred to the dikes of these facilities, and no barrier lake has been found. No structural failures have been reported in the embankments of these facilities, and there have been no instances of barrier lake formation.

This report gives valuable information to local communities on potential risks and allows them to take necessary precautions.

Why are they only focusing on a 50km radius? Earthquakes can cause damage much further away. This report feels incomplete.

This report makes me feel more scared, not less. The government is not doing enough to protect us.

Why are they downplaying the dangers of barrier lakes? These can cause sudden and catastrophic flooding, even days after the earthquake.

Focusing on water bodies as a potential hazard ignores the many other dangers an earthquake can cause. What about landslides, building collapses, and fires?

The lack of damage to dams and reservoirs is a positive sign, suggesting the infrastructure is resilient.
