President-elect Trump's Bold Policies on Immigration and Tariffs

Donald Trump, the President-elect, introduced key policies he intends to implement in the upcoming four years during a press conference on January 7. Addressing the future of foreign policy and immigration in Washington DC, he proposed changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America," stating that the new name holds a "beautiful ring" and more character. He emphasized that Mexico needs to take significant action in controlling the large influx of people entering the United States.

Trump asserted that he would establish substantial tariffs on both Mexico and Canada to curb drug trafficking, particularly pointing out the increasing amounts of drugs flowing into the country. He expressed concerns over Mexico, which shares a lengthy border with the U.S., noting that the country is in a precarious situation. He remains open to improving relations with both countries but insists that cooperation is a mutual obligation.

Upon entering the White House, Trump aims to sign an executive order that includes a hefty 25% tariff on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada, hoping to compel these nations to tackle issues surrounding illegal immigration and drug issues more effectively. Given that both countries are among the top trading partners with the U.S., there are apprehensions that these tariffs may create tensions and lead to increased consumer prices in America.

In addition, Trump utilized his social media platform, Truth Social, to advocate for stricter measures on migration and drug trafficking, especially targeting fentanyl from Mexico and Canada. He urged both nations to face serious consequences for not solving the ongoing problem and criticized Chinese officials for not fulfilling their commitments related to drug enforcement. Throughout his campaign, he had also threatened to implement tariffs as steep as 100% against Mexico and China.
