China's construction of a hydropower project on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River has undergone rigorous scientific assessment, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun. The project will not negatively impact the ecological environment, geological conditions, or water resource rights of downstream countries, Guo added.
Guo made these remarks in response to India's concerns about the construction of the hydropower dam on the Yarlung Zangbo River. India had conveyed its concerns to China through diplomatic channels.
Guo noted that the project can contribute to disaster prevention and mitigation efforts and support climate change adaptation in downstream regions. He emphasized that China has always attached great importance to the concerns of downstream countries and has conducted extensive consultations with them on the project.
China and India have a long history of cooperation on transboundary water resources. The two countries have signed a number of agreements on water-sharing and flood control. China is committed to working with India to ensure the sustainable development and utilization of transboundary water resources.
