The UN World Food Programme (WFP) strongly condemned an incident on January 5th, where Israeli forces opened fire on one of its convoys in the besieged Palestinian enclave of Gaza. The convoy, consisting of three vehicles carrying eight staff members, was traveling from central Gaza to Gaza City when it was struck by 16 bullets near the Wadi Gaza checkpoint. While no injuries were reported, the vehicles were immobilized.
The WFP emphasized that the vehicles were clearly marked and had received prior security clearances from Israeli authorities. This incident, deemed "horrifying" by the WFP, highlights the complex and dangerous working environment faced by humanitarian agencies in Gaza. The WFP called for improved security conditions to ensure the continuation of aid delivery.
The Israeli military responded by stating that they had done everything possible to facilitate the transfer of aid and were investigating the incident. They clarified operating procedures and would analyze the findings of the inquiry.
International aid agencies working in Gaza have frequently accused Israeli forces of hindering or threatening their operations, particularly during Israel's campaign against Hamas militants. This incident further underscores the challenges faced by humanitarian organizations in providing assistance to the people of Gaza.
