Arsenal's Injury Woes Mount Ahead of League Cup Semi-Final
Arsenal's preparations for Tuesday's League Cup semi-final against Newcastle United have been hampered by a fresh injury blow, with young midfielder Ethan Nwaneri ruled out for several weeks.
Nwaneri, 17, has been a revelation for the Gunners this season, featuring in 18 matches across all competitions and scoring five goals. However, he was forced off at halftime during Saturday's 1-1 draw at Brighton & Hove Albion and will now miss a significant period of time.
Manager Mikel Arteta confirmed the news on Monday, adding to Arsenal's growing injury list. Winger Bukayo Saka remains sidelined for over two months following hamstring surgery, while Raheem Sterling, Ben White, and Takehiro Tomiyasu are also unavailable.
Kai Havertz, who missed the last two games due to illness, is doubtful for the Newcastle clash. Arteta remained coy on potential reinforcements in the January transfer window, stating that the club is "very alert" to the market.
Despite the injury concerns, Arteta expressed his admiration for Newcastle, who have won their last six games and boast an in-form Alexander Isak. The Swedish striker has scored 14 goals in 21 games for the Magpies, including seven straight in the Premier League.
"They are a tough opponent. They have very good individual players," Arteta said. "Obviously he's (Isak) a top player, he's in top form. He is scoring a lot of goals. Trying to minimise the strength of the opposition," he added.
The League Cup semi-final presents a crucial opportunity for both teams, with a place in the final at stake. Arsenal will need to overcome their injury woes and find a way to contain the threat of Isak if they are to progress.
