Enrique Tarrio, the ex-leader of the Proud Boys based in Miami, has made an appeal to President-elect Donald Trump for a pardon. This request comes after Tarrio was found guilty of seditious conspiracy in relation to the Capitol riot that occurred on January 6, 2021. His attorney, Nayib Hassan, emphasized in a letter sent to Trump that Tarrio is a "young man with an aspiring future ahead of him," despite the challenges he faces due to his incarceration.
At 42 years old, Tarrio has been sentenced to an extensive 22 years in prison, marking the longest sentence handed out to anyone involved in the January 6 events. While he was not present at the Capitol during the riot, prosecutors contended that he played a significant role in orchestrating the attacks from outside the area. Attorney General Merrick Garland has characterized Tarrio’s involvement as central to the efforts aimed at disrupting the certification of Joe Biden's presidency.
Hassan, Tarrio’s attorney, indicated that he has been in discussions with individuals connected to Trump's transition team and expressed optimism that the president-elect might consider his client’s request for clemency. In the letter, Hassan noted that granting the pardon would help Tarrio reunite with his supportive family and signify a commitment to peaceful contributions to society. Despite these efforts, the Trump transition team has yet to issue a response regarding Tarrio's plea.
