Vice President Kamala Harris presided over the joint session of Congress on January 6, 2025, to certify the results of the 2024 presidential election.
Following the counting of electoral votes by each state, no objections were raised by any member of the House or Senate. As a result, the two-hour debate period and subsequent vote did not occur.
In her role as president of the Senate, Vice President Harris officially declared Donald Trump the winner of the 2024 presidential election. This marked the second time Trump had been elected president, having previously served from 2017 to 2021.
The certification of Trump's victory took place without any major disruptions, unlike the events of January 6, 2021, when a mob stormed the Capitol Building during the certification of Joe Biden's 2020 election win.
A recent report by the Department of Justice's Office of Inspector General revealed that approximately two dozen FBI confidential informants were present among the crowd outside the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Four of these informants reportedly entered the building illegally.
