Unique Competitions at the National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities in China

During the opening ceremony of the games in Sanya on November 22, dancers took center stage, captivating the audience. One of the standout moments was when Luo Jun, representing Hainan province, astoundingly climbed a 9-meter artificial coconut tree in a mere 6.188 seconds, leaving spectators in awe. This remarkable achievement secured him the victory in the men’s coconut tree climbing event, which made its debut at the 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities of China.

Luo, who hails from the Li ethnic group, expressed that the games have broadened the appeal of coconut tree climbing beyond just the Li and Miao communities, promoting it as an enjoyable sport for a wider audience across China and potentially internationally. He shared his preference for training on actual coconut trees, highlighting the immediate gratification of reaching the top and enjoying fresh coconut water.

The National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities of China features competitions that are unlike any other. In addition to coconut tree climbing, attendees were entertained by events such as single bamboo drifting, where participants balance on a piece of bamboo floating on water while propelling themselves with a bamboo pole. The event also included stilt racing, which showcases athletes balancing on poles that elevate them several centimeters off the ground.

These competitions are deeply rooted in the traditions and daily lives of various ethnic communities within China, evolving into a platform for multicultural participation. For instance, single bamboo drifting has origins in Guizhou province, where bamboo was traditionally utilized for river transport, while stilt racing has historical ties to the Miao people, who adapted this skill during ancient times to deal with flooding.

Since its inception in 1953, which featured fewer than 400 participants from 13 ethnic groups and only eight sports, the National Traditional Games have expanded significantly. During the latest games held in Sanya from November 22 to 30, an impressive 6,960 athletes from all 56 ethnic groups took part, competing in 18 traditional sports along with three demonstration events. Notably, all equestrian events were conducted earlier in July in Zhaosu, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.

Traditional games could use a makeover, not every local practice is worthy of national spotlight.

It’s great to see an event that brings together 56 ethnic groups! This is history in action!

The focus should be on inclusion through mainstream sports, not these quirky events.

Are we seriously promoting tree climbing as a sport? What’s next, race to the top of a building?

Why are we focusing on such niche activities? What about more universal sports?

How does climbing a coconut tree promote cultural understanding? Sounds superficial.

This whole event seems like an excuse for some to climb trees, not a legitimate competition.

Seems like a gimmick to me. Is this how we want to represent our traditions?
