Pakistan Peoples Party Threatens to Withdraw Support from Federal Government
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has threatened to withdraw its support from the federal government, citing a lack of trust and unilateral decision-making. In a statement, PPP leader Shazia Marri expressed strong disapproval of the government's formation of the Pakistan Maritime and Shipping Port Authority without consulting the PPP or the Sindh government.
Marri emphasized that the government's continued disregard for the PPP's concerns could lead to its collapse. She pointed out that the PPP has been calling for a meeting of the National Interest Council for eleven months, but Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has failed to convene it, violating the constitution.
Marri stressed the importance of discussing key national issues with allies and provinces before making decisions. She called the government's actions "incomprehensible" and warned that they could deepen divisions.
The PPP's threat comes amidst growing tensions between the party and the PML-N, its coalition partner. Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan, a member of the PPP, believes that the alliance has damaged the PPP's standing in Punjab. He predicts that the PML-N will soon face the consequences of this partnership.
The PPP and PML-N have a long history of rivalry in Punjab, and their current alliance is seen by some as a fragile one. The PPP's threat to withdraw support could have significant implications for the stability of the federal government.
