Navigating the World with Daron Acemoglu's Insights
As we enter a new year, uncertainty hangs heavy in the air. Donald Trump's return as the 47th president of the United States, with his unpredictable policies, fuels this unease. This uncertainty extends beyond American borders, with Japan facing a period of change due to the Liberal Democratic Party's diminished power.
In this climate, we turn to the insights of Nobel laureate Daron Acemoglu. He argues that a free and prosperous nation requires a dynamic relationship between "State" and "Society," where Society monitors and keeps the State in check. This balance, however, is delicate and easily disrupted.
Looking at Russia and Bangladesh, we see the consequences of this imbalance. Russia's oppressive state stifles dissent, while Bangladesh's authoritarian regime collapsed under public anger.
Five years ago, Acemoglu highlighted Japan's own issues, including the lack of effort in promoting social change and the absence of a counter-movement to the country's stagnation. This stagnation, coupled with economic decline and natural disasters, prompted a shift in thinking, with people realizing the need to build a stronger society, less reliant on the State.
American poet Walt Whitman echoed this sentiment, urging citizens to engage in politics and scrutinize the actions of their leaders. He believed that democracy thrives only when the people actively participate.
Following Whitman's call, we must examine the reasons behind Trump's re-election, understanding the roots of public distrust and frustration. This process is relevant to both Americans and Japanese.
In Japan, the LDP's diminished power presents an opportunity for transformation. The previous single-party dominance shrouded many government policies in secrecy. This year, we hope to see greater transparency and a more visible policy bargaining process.
As we navigate this year of uncertainty, let us remain vigilant, scrutinize political actions, and strive to build a better, more resilient society. By embracing Acemoglu's insights and Whitman's call to action, we can navigate the challenges ahead and create a more just and prosperous world.

Expecting transparency in politics is wishful thinking. The system is rigged against it.

Not everything can be solved by just pointing fingers at the state. The individual responsibility matters too!
