China Strengthens Aviation Safety Measures Following Recent Airline Incidents

On Friday, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) announced its commitment to enhancing aviation safety measures following concerning incidents involving other airlines. The rise in safety accidents, particularly involving Azerbaijan Airlines and Jeju Air, has prompted the CAAC to take proactive steps, including regular risk assessments in line with both domestic and international regulations to identify and address potential safety risks.

During a press conference, Shu Mingjiang, an official overseeing air travel safety, emphasized that the CAAC will issue safety risk warnings for flights that may be affected and adjust flight routes as necessary to maintain safe operations. The organization has held special meetings to analyze the circumstances surrounding these recent incidents, ensuring continuous monitoring of the investigations while urging the industry to conduct thorough reviews to mitigate safety hazards.

One particular focus is reducing the risk of bird strikes, especially given the upcoming winter migration of birds. The CAAC has instructed airports to observe bird migration patterns closely and to implement enhanced deterrent measures. Tailored prevention strategies will be developed based on specific local conditions and the behavior of various bird species to improve the effectiveness of these measures.

Additionally, comprehensive inspections are being mandated to identify and rectify any runway safety risks. The CAAC is also enhancing emergency drills to bolster response effectiveness. As the busy Spring Festival travel period approaches, the CAAC plans to initiate immediate safety oversight and inspections to ensure operations are safe and smoothly conducted.

the crash of an Embraer 190 operated by Azerbaijan Airlines near Aktau, Kazakhstan, which resulted in 62 passengers and five crew on board, and a Jeju Air flight incident where 179 people lost their lives during a botched landing attempt in South Korea.

The focus on bird strikes seems misplaced. We need to rethink aircraft design rather than just sticking to old prevention methods.
