Beijing Achieves Historic Air Quality Improvements in 2024
Beijing has made remarkable strides in improving its air quality, achieving two historic records in 2024. The city experienced the highest number of days with good air quality and the lowest number of days with heavy pollution since data collection began in 2013. This significant progress was announced at a news conference held by the Beijing Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau on Thursday.
The annual average concentration of PM 2.5, a key air pollutant, dropped to 30.5 micrograms per cubic meter in 2024, a 6.2% decrease from the previous year. This improvement is attributed to several innovative measures implemented by the city, including promoting new energy vehicles, upgrading enterprise emission standards, and advocating for fully enclosed construction practices.
The number of days with heavy pollution plummeted to just two in 2024, a staggering 96.6% decrease from 58 days in 2013. This dramatic reduction reflects the city's commitment to tackling air pollution and improving public health.
Beijing residents enjoyed 345 days of good air quality in 2024, accounting for an impressive 94.3% of the year. This significant improvement contrasts sharply with just 13 days of good air quality in 2013. The city also maintained continuous good PM 2.5 levels for over six months, a testament to its sustained efforts in air quality management.
These achievements demonstrate Beijing's dedication to environmental protection and its commitment to providing a healthier living environment for its citizens. The city's success serves as an inspiration for other cities around the world struggling with air pollution challenges.

They're just moving the pollution to other cities. This doesn't solve anything.
