The State Grid Hebei Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station reached a milestone on Tuesday as it began commercial operations of its final variable-speed generating unit, establishing itself as the largest pumped storage power station in the world. Situated in Fengning Manchu Autonomous County within Chengde City, Hebei Province, the facility is strategically located near the major load center of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and a significant renewable energy base in northern Hebei.
The power station boasts a substantial installed capacity of 3.6 million kilowatts, with a designed annual output of 6.612 billion kilowatt-hours and a water pumping capability of 8.716 billion kilowatt-hours each year. According to the State Grid Corporation of China, since the initial units came online in December 2021, the station has produced a total of 8.616 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity and has absorbed an impressive 10.902 billion kilowatt-hours of renewable energy, effectively stabilizing and balancing the power grid.
Now fully operational, the Fengning facility is projected to save approximately 480,800 metric tons of standard coal each year, translating to a reduction of 1.2 million tons in carbon dioxide emissions. This development is vital for improving the energy mix and advancing efforts to lower carbon footprints.
