On Friday, China introduced its most advanced amphibious assault ship, the CNS Sichuan, during a launch ceremony in Shanghai. This ship is the first in the new Type 076 class and is being constructed at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding facility, a branch of the China State Shipbuilding Corp, which is the country's leading naval contractor.
The CNS Sichuan is designed to displace over 40,000 metric tons and is equipped to carry various aircraft, including fixed-wing planes, helicopters, and amphibious landing craft. Its innovative two-island superstructure configuration distinguishes it from previous Chinese vessels, aiming to optimize aviation operations. The vessel includes a full-length flight deck and an electromagnetic launch system, which allows the deployment of fixed-wing aircraft from the ship.
During the launch event, notable attendees included Navy leaders, Sichuan provincial officials, and representatives from the shipbuilding company, who witnessed the moment the ship was moved into the water. This launch is a pivotal milestone in the construction of a ship, signaling that major structural work has been completed. Following the launch, engineers will work on outfitting the ship’s equipment before it undergoes mooring tests and sea trials.
As it stands, the People’s Liberation Army currently operates three Type 075 amphibious assault ships, named for Hainan, Guangxi, and Anhui, all constructed at the same shipyard. The Type 075 vessels weigh nearly 40,000 tons and can accommodate multiple helicopters and landing crafts, along with a substantial number of tanks and armored vehicles.
