A Symbol of Progress
Burkina Faso's capital city, Ouagadougou, is set to welcome a brand new airport this year. The Ouagadougou-Donsin Airport will replace the existing Thomas Sankara International Airport, which has served the city since the 1960s. The new airport is located approximately 35 kilometers north of Ouagadougou, in the village of Donsin.
The decision to build a new airport was driven by several factors. The current airport is located within the city's urban area, causing pollution and posing safety hazards. Additionally, the airport has reached its capacity, handling nearly all of Burkina Faso's scheduled commercial air traffic. The new airport will address these concerns, offering a modern and efficient facility that can accommodate future growth.
The Ouagadougou-Donsin Airport is a significant investment, with a total cost of £440 million. The project has been funded by loans from various institutions, including the West African Development Bank and ECOWAS Banks for Investment and Development. The new airport is expected to generate significant economic benefits, with a projected return of £350 million and the creation of nearly 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.
The first phase of construction was completed in 2018, allowing for the initial transfer of operations from the old airport to the new one. The plans for the new airport include a single runway measuring 3,500 meters, which is 500 meters longer than the runway at the current airport. This extended runway will allow for larger aircraft to operate, further enhancing the airport's capacity and connectivity.
The Ouagadougou-Donsin Airport is more than just a transportation hub; it is a symbol of progress for Burkina Faso. The new airport represents the country's commitment to modernization and economic development. It is expected to play a crucial role in boosting tourism, trade, and investment, contributing to the nation's overall prosperity.
