A brave toddler named Zachary Bradford lost his life after enduring serious health issues from the moment he was born. He passed away in hospital shortly after his mother, Jade, made an emotional appeal for people to consider organ donation as a New Year’s resolution, highlighting their desperate situation.
Zachary was born prematurely at just 28 weeks and weighed only 2lbs 13oz. He was diagnosed with gastroschisis, a rare condition where the bowel forms outside of the body. This severe complication led to a majority of his bowel being surgically removed, and he spent three months in the Neonatal Unit at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, undergoing several major operations, including heart surgery and procedures to support his feeding.
Tragically, by early 2022, Zachary's health took another turn for the worse, with his parents learning he was suffering from liver and intestinal failure as a result of prolonged IV feeds. Following evaluations at King’s College Hospital in London, he was placed on the double transplant list for a small bowel and liver. Although he received a new liver in 2023, complications arose when he developed sepsis, which severely affected the transplanted organ.
In September, Zachary’s family received the heart-wrenching news that he might only have a few weeks to live, prompting them to brace for the inevitable while still hoping for new organ donors. Initially, there was a requirement for organs from a small child, but as Zachary’s condition worsened, doctors decided they would also consider larger organ donors. Despite the ongoing struggle, his parents celebrated Zachary’s third birthday on October 4 and even shifted their wedding date, allowing him to be part of their special moment.
As January approached, Jade reflected on the challenges they faced, expressing that while many people make typical New Year resolutions, their sole focus was on keeping Zachary alive. She poignantly shared that while others might prioritize personal goals, their only wish was for their son to survive. Sadly, on Friday, Jade announced Zachary's passing, mourning the profound loss in a heartfelt message, and expressing her devastation, stating that her world feels shattered without him. Jade's message resonated deeply, urging others to recognize the significance of organ donation.

😡 Sharing a dying child's story to promote organ donation feels manipulative and wrong. There are better ways to raise awareness.

🤔 This is tragic, but using a child's suffering for anything, even a good cause, feels like taking advantage of their vulnerability.
