Norovirus Cases Surge, Experts Issue Warning
Norovirus cases are surging, with a 40% increase compared to previous years. This highly contagious winter vomiting bug can also cause diarrhoea and is putting additional strain on an already overwhelmed health service. Experts are urging people to take precautions to prevent further spread.
Norovirus is typically transmitted through close contact with an infected person, touching contaminated surfaces, or consuming food handled by someone infected. The virus can linger on fabric for up to a month, including clothing, chairs, sofas, cushions, and curtains.
Washing hands is the primary defense against norovirus. Water helps break down the virus's protective protein shell. Experts also recommend washing and drying clothes at high temperatures and using biological washing detergents containing enzymes called lipases.
Cleaning surfaces touched by someone with norovirus is crucial to remove and destroy the virus. Experts advise against vacuuming areas where a person has vomited, as this could spread pathogens. Instead, apply baking soda to the affected area before steam cleaning or disinfecting with antimicrobial products effective against norovirus.
Recent data from the UK Health Security Agency shows that the total number of norovirus reports in 2024 is more than double that of five years ago. NHS data shows that hospital beds occupied by patients with norovirus-like symptoms remain 40% higher than the same point last year.
