Ethiopia Set to Construct Africa’s Largest Airport with £5 Billion Investment

Ethiopian Airlines has unveiled a grand plan to establish what will become Africa's largest airport, a project that is anticipated to cost over £5 billion. This endeavor is part of the airline's long-term vision to enhance its presence in the region's aviation sector. The construction of the airport, located in Abusera, is a key element of a 15-year strategy to transform Ethiopia into a major aviation hub. During a recent press conference, CEO Mesfin Tasew announced a memorandum of understanding has been signed with the consulting firm Dar, based in Dubai, to assist in developing the airport's design.

Initially scheduled for completion in 2029, the airport will have a capacity of 60 million passengers each year, with future expansions planned to accommodate up to 110 million. The project, led by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) along with Dar Al-Handasah Consultants, will feature a terminal spanning over 600,000 square meters, along with 126,000 square meters dedicated to airline support areas. The design focuses on creating an engaging and navigable layout, ensuring that the terminal is spacious and filled with natural light, providing a smooth experience for travelers. Situated in Bishoftu, approximately 40 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa, the airport will cover an area of 35 square kilometers and will consist of two parallel runways.

Cristiano Ceccato, ZHA’s Director of Aviation, emphasized that the airport will firmly position Ethiopia within Africa's transportation networks, describing it as a global gateway for the continent that connects communities across the globe through a well-integrated air transport system. With its services reaching over 150 destinations, Ethiopian Airlines has emerged as Africa's largest airline, reporting a revenue of $7 billion and transporting 17.1 million passengers in the 2023/24 financial year. The project's formal initiation was marked on August 3, 2016, with an agreement between Mesfin Tasew and Tariq Al-Khani, CEO of Dar.
