Major Winter Storm to Impact Millions in the Eastern U.S.
A significant winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow, ice, and frigid temperatures to the central and eastern United States starting Saturday, impacting millions of people. The National Weather Service warns of potential travel disruptions, power outages, and dangerous conditions.
The storm will bring widespread heavy snow to areas between central Kansas and Indiana, particularly along and north of Interstate 70. Some regions could see the heaviest snowfall in a decade. Blizzard conditions are possible in Kansas and nearby areas due to high winds and heavy snowfall.
Dangerous sleet and freezing rain are anticipated from eastern Kansas to Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and much of Kentucky and West Virginia. This could lead to treacherous travel conditions and power outages.
Starting Monday, the eastern two-thirds of the country will experience dangerously cold air and wind chills. Temperatures could be 12 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit colder than normal, with the biggest drop expected over the Ohio Valley. A hard freeze is even possible in Florida.
The extreme weather may be linked to a fast-warming Arctic. The polar vortex, a mass of cold air, can sometimes stretch down to the U.S., causing intense cold spells. Studies suggest that the warming Arctic is contributing to an increase in these events.
Avoiding travel if possible.
Preparing for power outages.
Dressing warmly and protecting exposed skin.
Staying informed about the latest weather forecasts.
This major winter storm is expected to have a significant impact on millions of people. It is crucial to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this extreme weather event.
