My son left home for his first year of college, and I was worried about staying connected with him. I read many stories about parents who lost contact with their college-aged children, and I didn't want that to happen to us.
I talked to my son about my concerns, and we came up with a plan. He agreed to send me a "proof of life" photo every day. It could be a picture of anything, as long as it showed me he was alive and well.
This simple act helped us stay connected throughout his first year of college. I knew he was safe and doing well, and he knew that I was thinking of him.
We are still adjusting to this new normal, but our daily check-ins have made the transition much easier. I am so grateful for my son's willingness to stay connected with me, and I know that our relationship will continue to grow stronger as he becomes an adult.

A photo doesn’t equal connection. It’s the conversations that matter.

I love this approach. Communication is key, especially in a big transition!

This seems a bit over the top. College is about independence, not daily check-ins.

I think it’s wonderful that you two can communicate openly about your needs.

What happens when he forgets to send a photo? You'll worry for no reason.

It’s heartwarming to see parents making an effort to stay involved.

Why can't you just trust him to reach out when he has time? This is too controlling.
