Renu Bhatia, who chairs the Haryana Commission for Women, has voiced her serious worries regarding the recent suicide of a Dalit student in Loharu, Bhiwani. During her visit to the college, she noted contradictions in the accounts presented by the principal and the college owner. Conversations with students unveiled that college fees for July had been waived for the year 2024, suggesting it might be linked to an election campaign strategy.
Bhatia stressed the urgency for a detailed investigation, particularly into whether the college principal reached out to the family of the deceased. Prior to her suicide, the student mentioned to her grandmother that she had been prevented from taking an exam. Bhatia also indicated the necessity of examining the phone records of a person named Rahul for further insights.
To maintain the integrity of the inquiry, Bhatia proposed that a senior committee oversee the investigation to prevent potential influences on local officials. The Haryana Commission for Women plans to formally request that the case be transferred to the state crime branch to ensure an unbiased evaluation. Reports suggest that the girl had reportedly faced pressure to pay her fees and was coerced by college representatives to engage in a physical relationship with the college director's son as a means to resolve her unpaid dues.
Separately, Bhiwani Police have apprehended another individual linked to the case, identified as Hanuman, the father of the accused, Rahul. In response to the serious allegations against the college, a committee has been established by the District Deputy Commissioner of Bhiwani to investigate the matter comprehensively. This committee comprises key local officials, including the sub-divisional officer and the Deputy Superintendent of Police.
Haryana Minister Gaurav Gautam has echoed the need for an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident, affirming the government’s commitment to delivering justice. He condemned any involvement by political figures and reiterated the importance of a thorough investigation into this tragic incident.

The student's right to education should have been protected, not violated. This is a complete failure on the part of the college administration.

The entire college administration should be held accountable for creating an environment where students feel vulnerable and exploited.

I'm appalled by the lack of empathy and support shown towards the student. Her voice mattered, and her concerns needed to be addressed.
