China to Host APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in 2026
Chinese President Xi Jinping announced on Saturday that China will host the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in 2026. The announcement was made during the 31st APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Lima, Peru, where leaders from the APEC economies gathered to discuss pressing global issues such as trade, sustainability, and inclusive growth.
"We look forward to working with all parties to deepen Asia-Pacific cooperation to the benefit of the peoples in the region," Xi said.
This will be the third time China has hosted the prestigious gathering since APEC's founding in 1989. Xi highlighted the organization's role in leading Asia and the Pacific to "great success in development, prosperity and connectivity," making the region "the most dynamic economy and primary engine of global economic growth."
However, Xi also acknowledged the challenges facing Asia-Pacific cooperation, including rising tendencies of geopolitics, unilateralism, and protectionism. He urged APEC economies to act in solidarity and cooperation to overcome these challenges.

The APEC summit should be held in a country that upholds democratic values and respects human rights. APEC should not reward China's authoritarian government by hosting the summit there.
