Kyrgios's Fitness Questioned After Brisbane Loss
Nick Kyrgios's match fitness was put to the test in his first competitive match after an 18-month layoff due to wrist and knee injuries. While he ultimately fell to 21-year-old Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a grueling three-set tiebreak battle, the Australian showed glimpses of his trademark power and flair.
The match, which lasted over two and a half hours, saw Mpetshi Perricard's powerful serve prove too much for Kyrgios to handle. The Frenchman fired 36 aces compared to Kyrgios's 15, consistently exceeding 220 kph (135 mph) and backing it up with booming second serves. Neither player managed to break serve throughout the match, highlighting the dominance of their serves.
Kyrgios expressed frustration at times, receiving a warning from the chair umpire for his language after missing a rare break point opportunity in the second set. Despite the loss, Kyrgios expressed his joy at being back on the court and participating in the Australian summer of tennis. However, he acknowledged the severity of his wrist injury, stating that he would need a "miracle" for it to hold up throughout a Grand Slam tournament.
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic, Kyrgios's doubles partner and the 2022 Wimbledon champion, secured a comfortable victory over Australian wild-card entry Rinky Hijikata. Djokovic is aiming for his 100th ATP tournament win in Brisbane before attempting to claim a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.
On the women's side, world No. 1 and two-time Australian Open defending champion Aryna Sabalenka began her Brisbane campaign with a dominant win over Renata Zarazua. Sabalenka is looking to achieve a three-peat in Melbourne and her performance in Brisbane suggests she is in top form.
In other men's singles matches, Frances Tiafoe defeated Australian wild-card entry Adam Walton, while tournament No. 5 seed Sebastian Korda withdrew due to a lower back injury.

I'm sick of hearing about his excuses. He needs to take responsibility.

Kyrgios is all talk and no action. He clearly isn't fit enough to compete at this level.

18 months off and he still can't handle a serve? Pathetic.

He's only harming his own career with this attitude.
