Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed on Thursday that he sees U.S. President-elect Donald Trump as a key figure who could significantly influence the ongoing conflict with Russia, which has been ongoing for 34 months. In an interview with Ukrainian television, Zelensky noted that Trump had indicated his intention to be one of the first leaders to visit Washington following his inauguration.
Amid Russian military advancements in eastern Ukraine, Zelensky articulated his immediate focus on stabilizing the front line at the outset of the new year. He stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is wary of negotiations, as they would signal Russia's defeat. Zelensky was enthusiastic about Trump's potential role in the conflict, asserting, “Trump can be decisive. For us, this is the most important thing,” and acknowledging Trump’s abilities to halt Putin's aggression.
Additionally, Zelensky outlined his vision for achieving a fair peace for Ukraine, which includes gaining strong security guarantees from allies, pursuing membership in the European Union, and aiming for NATO membership, which Russia staunchly opposes. He emphasized that any security assurances would be inadequate without U.S. involvement and insisted that U.S. plans for peace must align with Ukraine's interests.
Zelensky reiterated the necessity for the U.S. administration under Trump to engage promptly with Russia. While Putin has indicated Russia's willingness to discuss peace, he maintains that any dialogue must recognize the territorial gains Russia has made during the conflict. Against the backdrop of shrinking Ukrainian territories to Russian advances, Zelensky stressed the urgent need to stabilize the front lines, revealing concerns about the morale and exhaustion of Ukrainian forces.
As for his political future, Zelensky, who was elected in 2019, stated that he would not pursue new elections under the current wartime state of emergency but would consider running again if circumstances allowed. He expressed uncertainty about how the conflict would resolve, stating, "If I can do more than I am able, then I will probably view such a decision more positively," but concluded that focusing on the present challenges remains his priority.

Why should we believe that Trump will prioritize Ukraine? He has proven to be self-serving.

Relying on Trump sends the wrong message. Ukraine needs a unified international front against Russia.

When will Zelensky realize that true support comes from within Europe, not from U.S. presidential politics?
