The Canadiens initially trailed 2-0 late in the second period but rallied in the third, with Kirby Dach netting the decisive goal, while Cole Caufield and Emil Heineman also found the back of the net.

Goaltender Sam Montembeault played a vital role for Montreal, stopping 27 shots and making key saves in the closing seconds of the game. Despite Zach Whitecloud and Noah Hanifin scoring for the Golden Knights and Adin Hill making 19 saves, Vegas couldn't maintain their lead in a contest where they had opportunities to extend their advantage.

The Golden Knights had been performing well, with a commendable record of 10-2 in December, but this loss marked only their second defeat of the month.
