The Ottawa Charge edged out the Toronto Sceptres in a thrilling 2-1 victory on Tuesday. The game was a nail-biter, with the winning goal coming from an unlikely source with just 70 seconds remaining.
Defender Jincy Roese's long-range wrist shot was initially heading wide, but it took a fortunate bounce off the end of Toronto goalie Raygan Kirk's pad and redirected into the net. This late goal secured the win for Ottawa, despite being outshot by Toronto 38-13.
Ottawa goalie Emerance Maschmeyer was the star of the game, making 37 saves and coming within six minutes of recording the PWHL's first shutout of the season. Toronto's lone goal came on the power play after Hannah Miller capitalized on a five-minute major given to Ottawa's Tereza Vanisova.
The game was the latest installment of the "Battle of Ontario" rivalry, coming just hours after a four-player trade between the two teams. The trade saw Toronto acquire defender Savannah Harmon and forward Hayley Scamurra from Ottawa in exchange for Victoria Bach and veteran defender Jocelyne Larocque.
The Charge opened the scoring in the second period when Ronja Savolainen fired a shot from the high slot past Kirk. Ottawa had a chance to extend their lead late in the period, but Danielle Serdachny's breakaway attempt went high.
The Sceptres tied the game early in the third period on a power play goal by Miller. However, Roese's late heroics secured the victory for the Charge.
The win improves Ottawa's record to 5-2-0, while Toronto falls to 3-3-1. The Charge will next visit the New York Siren on January 7th.

If the Sceptres can’t score more than one goal in a game, they really need to rethink their strategy.

How can you call it a thrilling victory when the team was outshot 38-13? That tells a different story.

Disappointed to see Toronto drop this game; they really need to step up their game to remain competitive.

A win is a win, I guess, but let’s not pretend Ottawa deserved it with those numbers.
