Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz, the top-seeded pair from the United States, have advanced to the United Cup mixed teams tennis quarterfinals.
Fritz defeated Borna Coric 6-3, 6-2 on Tuesday, securing the Americans' victory in Group A. Gauff followed up with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Donna Vekic in the women's singles.
"Really happy with how I played today," Gauff said. "She's a great player. The Olympics loss hurt so I definitely was thinking about it just as motivation to do better and I'm happy to send my team through."
The U.S. had previously defeated Canada in their opening match.
The Perth quarterfinals were scheduled for Wednesday, with the U.S. facing China, which qualified as the best runner-up. Group winners Kazakhstan and Germany will also play each other.
In Sydney, Italy also secured a quarterfinal berth with a 3-0 win over France at Ken Rosewall Arena. Flavio Cobolli upset Ugo Humbert 6-3, 6-7 (8), 6-2 in the singles match. Jasmine Paolini defeated Chloe Paquet 6-0, 6-2 to give Italy an insurmountable lead before they also won the mixed doubles.
Italy, winners of the past two Davis Cups and runners-up to the U.S. in the inaugural edition of the United Cup, topped Group D without world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. They had also defeated Switzerland 2-0 in their opening tie.

Both Gauff and Fritz are overrated for the hype they’re getting. There are many other players who deserve more recognition.

Let’s not forget that winning against weaker teams doesn’t prove much. It's all about the big matches.

The real competition is yet to come. Let's wait and see if they can handle the pressure against stronger teams.

I’m not impressed by this victory. They still have a long way to go to prove they can handle pressure.
