Investigation Focuses on Embankment, Pilot Decisions, and Landing Gear Failure

Jeju Air Flight 7C2216 Crash Investigation

South Korean authorities are investigating the crash of Jeju Air Flight 7C2216, which occurred on Sunday, October 26, 2023, and resulted in the deaths of 179 people. The Boeing 737-800 aircraft, en route from Bangkok to Muan, belly-landed and overshot the runway, exploding into flames after hitting an embankment.

Police have raided the offices of Jeju Air, the operator of Muan International Airport, and the transportation ministry aviation authority. They are searching for documents and materials related to the operation and maintenance of the aircraft, as well as the operation of airport facilities.

The investigation is focusing on several factors, including the presence of a rigid embankment near the runway, the pilot's decision to attempt a second landing after reporting a bird strike, and the aircraft's failure to deploy its landing gear.

The flight data recorder has been sent to the United States for analysis, and the cockpit voice recorder's data is being converted to audio files. Investigators from the NTSB, FAA, and Boeing are assisting in the probe.

Acting President Choi Sang-mok has called for a special inspection of all Boeing 737-800 aircraft operated in South Korea. He has also asked for support for the families of the victims and action against those spreading misinformation about the disaster.

So many lives lost, and all we hear are technical investigations. Where’s the compassion for the victims’ families?

I'm tired of hearing the same excuses. The aviation industry needs reform before more tragedies occur.

This crash is a tragic reminder of how negligent airline companies can be. Jeju Air must take full accountability.

This incident makes me question the safety protocols at Muan International Airport. What were they thinking?

The presence of an embankment near the runway should have been addressed long ago. Just unacceptable!

A bird strike should not lead to such a catastrophic failure. Clearly, the pilots and maintenance teams failed.

Misinformation? More like lack of proper communication from authorities. The public deserves transparency!

Bird strikes can happen, but it’s important to learn from each incident. Hopefully, this leads to better protocols.

Football standards for safety need to be raised. This is simply not good enough, no matter the outcome of the investigation.
