Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant continued their strong performance at the Canadian mixed doubles curling trials by winning both of their matches on Wednesday. The duo from Calgary remains unbeaten, boasting an impressive record of 6-0 in Pool B, which guarantees them a spot in the upcoming playoff round with one preliminary game still left to play.
The results of the trials are crucial, as the eventual winners will have the opportunity to represent Canada in the 2026 Olympic Games, provided they also perform well enough at the 2025 world championships to secure a place for the country in Italy. Currently, Canada is positioned fifth in the world rankings, which makes their quest even more pressing, as the Olympic competition will consist of the top eight ranked teams globally, or the top seven alongside host nation Italy, depending on rankings.
In the trials structure, the 16 participating teams were split into two pools, each vying for a top-three finish to advance to the playoffs starting Thursday evening. The final match is scheduled for Saturday at the Queens Place Emera Centre. In their most recent performances, Peterman and Gallant easily defeated the father-daughter team of Jim and Jaelyn Cotter with an 8-1 score, followed by a 5-2 victory over Tyrel Griffith and Jennifer Armstrong.
Looking ahead, Peterman and Gallant have one last game against the 2024 Canadian champions, Colton and Kadriana Lott, who currently hold a record of 4-2. The Lotts recently secured a win against Lisa Weagle and John Epping, maintaining their playoff hopes. Meanwhile, the competition in Pool A intensified as Rachel Homan and Brendan Bottcher suffered their first loss, falling to Brittany Tran and Rylan Kleiter, leaving several teams tied at the top.
