U.S. Ambassador to Japan hails stronger alliance, deterrence capabilities

In an interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun, U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel praised the growing strength of the Japan-U.S. alliance and its deterrence capabilities. He noted that during his three-year tenure, the alliance has become "better prepared and stronger" in deterring potential threats.

Emanuel emphasized the importance of the alliance as an "unending marathon," requiring constant commitment from both countries in the face of a deteriorating security environment. He highlighted the crucial role of credible deterrence, which has been instrumental in forming trilateral ties with both the Philippines and South Korea during the Biden administration.

Regarding China, the ambassador expressed concern over its "wolf warrior strategy," which he believes has backfired. He acknowledged the upcoming transition to the Trump administration, which is expected to prioritize bilateral relations over multilateral cooperation.

Despite this shift, Emanuel expressed confidence that Japan and the United States will continue to collaborate on trilateral security initiatives with South Korea and the Philippines through joint drills and information sharing. He commended Japan's strong support within the Indo-Pacific region, suggesting that the United States could benefit from a deeper appreciation of Japan's diplomatic influence.
