President-elect Donald Trump has filed an amicus brief with the US Supreme Court, requesting a postponement of a law that could either ban TikTok or compel its sale due to national security concerns. The brief, spanning 25 pages, argues for the suspension of a January 19 deadline to allow the incoming administration time to negotiate a resolution that could remove the necessity for the court's ruling on the matter.
In his brief, Trump stated that he possesses the necessary negotiation skills and political mandate to address the government’s national security worries while keeping the platform active. He has previously mentioned his favorable view of TikTok, especially following its popularity among younger voters during his campaign, and acknowledged the significant engagement he received on the platform.
Reports indicate that Trump met with TikTok's CEO, Chew Shou Zi, at his Mar-a-Lago resort in mid-December. Additionally, the Supreme Court has agreed to review TikTok and its parent company ByteDance's appeal against a law demanding the app's sale or facing a ban, with arguments scheduled for January 10 to assess potential First Amendment violations.

I'm glad he supports continued access to a platform that engages youth in political discourse.

Why should Trump get special treatment? No platform should be above the law.

This is a clear attempt to protect a platform that has been known to harvest user data.

The fact that he met with TikTok's CEO raises red flags. This smells like corruption.

Is this really about national security or is he just trying to keep his fanbase happy?

His favorable views on TikTok seem to be a conflict of interest given the potential risks.

He’s prioritizing TikTok over the safety of our data. This is irresponsible leadership.
