China's Dominance

Highlights from the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit

A prominent decoration has been set up near the China National Convention Center in Beijing in anticipation of the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), which is scheduled to take place from September 4 to 6. In a recent briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning highlighted the productive outcomes of China-Africa relations this year, despite ongoing global challenges.

During the summit, nearly 6,000 guests, including leaders from 53 African nations with diplomatic ties to China, the head of the African Union Commission, and the UN Secretary-General, gathered in Beijing. Mao pointed out that this assembly marked a significant moment in the ongoing partnership, noting that China's diplomatic ties with all African nations have now been elevated to strategic partnerships.

The 2024 FOCAC facilitated notable advancements in cooperation, as it unveiled six key proposals and ten partnership initiatives aimed at advancing modernization collaboratively between China and Africa. There are ongoing successful projects in Africa that have been categorized as significant and impactful, demonstrating the genuine growth of the China-Africa partnership.

The summit also emphasized the unity of the Global South, highlighting the roles of both China and Africa in this collective movement. The Beijing Declaration produced during the summit expressed a shared opposition among participants to hegemonism and certain global challenges affecting trade dynamics.

Looking forward to 2025, China has committed to following through on the initiatives discussed at the 2024 summit. By aligning policies and strategies with African nations, fostering cultural exchanges, and supporting each other on critical issues, China aims to solidify the concept of an enduring China-Africa community. This engagement seeks to uphold shared interests while advancing the ideals of fairness, justice, and peace on a global scale.

Concerned about the lack of transparency and accountability in these deals. Where are the benefits for the African people?

Appreciative of China's support for Africa's infrastructure development and economic diversification.

We need to be cautious about China's growing economic and political influence in Africa. It could lead to neocolonialism.

It's disturbing how China is using debt-trap diplomacy to gain leverage over African countries.

These initiatives sound good on paper, but we need to see concrete action and results on the ground.
