A scale model of the new J-20S, a two-seat version of China's stealth fighter jet, is currently on display at the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) exhibition at Airshow China 2024. This event, taking place in Zhuhai, South China's Guangdong Province from November 12 to 17, features this groundbreaking military aircraft that is the first of its kind known worldwide.
The J-20S is touted as a new generation, medium-to-long range, two-seat heavy multirole stealth fighter jet that has been independently developed by China. It is designed for air superiority missions and precision strikes on terrestrial and maritime targets, according to information provided by AVIC. With enhancements derived from the original J-20, the J-20S boasts improved situational awareness, electronic disruption capabilities, and better tactical command and control.
Historically, the evolution of fighter jets has often seen single-seat models expand into two-seat variants to facilitate training and operational versatility. Military expert Zhang Xuefeng noted that the presence of a second pilot is invaluable for managing complex operations, such as radar detection and missile strikes. In the context of fifth-generation fighter jets, which come equipped with sophisticated networks and AI technologies, having an additional pilot can significantly improve command and collaborative capabilities among multiple aircraft and drones.
Zhang explained that loyal wingman drones could serve multiple roles, acting as external sensors or as platforms for launching weapons. The integration of drones into air combat scenarios could greatly enhance situational awareness and engagement strategies for a pilot, turning them into commanders who can leverage a network of drones efficiently. Drones like the FH-97A, previously displayed at Airshow China 2022, not only function as sensors but also as an ammunition base and as supportive AI tools, helping pilots manage the complexities of modern warfare.

The US has been developing similar technology for years. It's about time China caught up.

I don't see how a second pilot will significantly improve command and collaborative capabilities. We already have AI for that.

The integration of drones into air combat is interesting, but I'm not sure how practical it will be in real-world scenarios.

I'm concerned about the safety implications of adding another person to the cockpit. What happens if the second pilot is injured or killed?
