The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, faced an unexpected predicament when an Israeli airstrike hit Sanaa's international airport, leaving him stranded in Yemen and injuring a member of the UN staff. Following the attack, which took place while he was set to leave Yemen, Tedros announced via social media that both he and the injured staff member had evacuated to Jordan for further medical care.
While in Yemen, Tedros was participating in UN-led talks aimed at negotiating the release of 13 UN personnel detained by Houthi rebels. After the airstrike, he expressed his outrage at the incident, stating that attacks on civilians and humanitarian workers must cease universally. The Israeli military confirmed the airstrikes, claiming that they targeted Houthi installations used for smuggling Iranian arms. Meanwhile, local reports from Houthi-operated Al-Masirah TV indicated that the airstrikes resulted in casualties and inflicted substantial damage to both the airport and nearby areas, although the total number of casualties and the precise degree of destruction remain uncertain.

Too much fuss about one incident! There are bigger global health issues for Tedros to address.

Thank you, Tedros, for standing up for humanitarian workers and civilians caught in conflicts. Your voice matters!

The WHO’s mission goes beyond healthcare; it’s about protecting lives, even in conflict zones. Well said, Tedros!

Airstrikes may be necessary when it comes to targeting terrorists. Tedros should stay out of military affairs.

If he’s going to lead health discussions, he shouldn’t be caught up in political situations that distract from his work.

It's appalling that airstrikes hit civilian areas. Tedros is right to condemn such violence. We need more advocates like him.

This is just an excuse to divert attention from the failures of the WHO during the pandemic.

The narrative of innocent civilians being attacked is too one-sided. What about the Houthi rebels’ actions?
