New York City FC has announced that they have loaned midfielder James Sands to the German Bundesliga club FC St. Pauli. This loan deal commenced on Wednesday and is set to last until June 30; however, it includes an option to extend through the 2025-26 season if certain criteria are fulfilled.
Previously, Sands spent time on loan at Rangers FC in the Scottish Premiership, where he made 41 appearances during the 2022-23 season. Sporting director David Lee expressed his enthusiasm for Sands' new opportunity, noting that after returning from his time with Rangers, Sands had expressed a desire to return to Europe, and the club is supportive of his ambitions at this opportune moment.
At 24 years old, Sands has played in 120 MLS matches for NYCFC since joining the team in 2017, recording one goal and six assists. He was recognized as an All-Star in 2021 and played as a starter on the team that secured the MLS Cup championship during that season. Expressing his thoughts on the move, Sands mentioned that after spending two years in New York, he believes it's the right moment to return to Europe and is excited about testing himself in a new league. He also extended best wishes to his teammates and the club for the upcoming season while his contract with NYCFC runs until 2028.

Hopefully Sands doesn't get lost in the shuffle at FC St. Pauli, that club isn’t known for nurturing talent.

What's the point of producing talent if we just send them off to other countries? Keep them here!

Good for Sands! He’s always wanted to return to Europe, and this is a step towards his dreams.

Sands should focus on solidifying his position in the MLS instead of taking risks in a lower European league.

Another lost opportunity for NYCFC to build a winning squad for the upcoming season.

It's disappointing that NYCFC seems more focused on loans than winning championships.

I don't think this is a smart move for his career. He could have made a bigger impact right here.
