In Dukem Town, located approximately 33 kilometers east of Addis Ababa, the delivery of 40 water cellars marks a significant advancement for the local community. This initiative, led by the China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD) in collaboration with Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group Co., Ltd., has successfully established over 200 water cellars, positively impacting more than 12,000 vulnerable residents in Ethiopia's arid regions.
One resident, Getachew Gemechu, a 25-year-old father of two, highlighted the longstanding issue of water scarcity that has hindered the agricultural routines of local families. His backyard farm, now flourishing with various fruit and vegetable crops, serves as a symbol of that change. Gemechu expressed the crucial role of safe water access in supporting their agricultural practices, noting how the community previously endured significant hardships due to limited water supply, often spending hours fetching water from distant streams.
With the implementation of the water cellar project, Gemechu and 39 other households in the Melka community have experienced a notable shift. The water cellars have proven to be effective in collecting rainwater during the wet seasons, allowing their families to utilize this stored water for farming and daily needs. Gemechu’s wife, Ake Adugna, also commented on the transformative impact of the project, emphasizing its contribution to improving the family’s quality of life by providing consistent access to clean water.
The positive changes brought by this project extend beyond just domestic benefits; Tsegab Demeke, a project officer at CFRD Ethiopia, indicated that it has also facilitated better educational opportunities for children. Previously, many students were unable to attend school regularly due to water collection duties, but this initiative is helping to alleviate that burden.
Beyond the water cellar initiative, CFRD has been actively involved in supporting the local community by implementing other projects since 2021, which includes educational programs, provision of school supplies, and renewable energy solutions. Tamiru Tolosa, a member of the Melka community, reflected on the life-altering difference these interventions have made and expressed hope for continued support through similar projects in the future.
