China Forms Technical Committee for AI Standardization

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in China announced the establishment of a technical committee focused on the standardization of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This initiative aims to enhance the development of the AI industry while facilitating new industrialization processes.

This committee represents the first of its kind that the ministry has set up, signifying a crucial advancement in the standardization efforts within the AI field. It is tasked with the creation and modification of industrial standards for AI-related domains, signaling a strategic move in line with the objectives highlighted during China's Central Economic Work Conference in December, where a strong emphasis was placed on launching an "AI-plus" initiative to foster future industries.

In 2023, China's core AI sector achieved impressive growth, reaching a market scale of 578.7 billion yuan (approximately $80.5 billion), backed by a vibrant ecosystem comprising 4,482 enterprises, as reported by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

Don't we have bigger problems to worry about, like climate change and environmentalism? Why are we so obsessed with this AI hype?

Great, so much for AI creating jobs. Now that the government is involved, it'll just be used to further automate workplaces and replace human workers.

Does anyone remember the Theranos scandal? We've been down this road before with hyped-up technology promises. I'm not convinced AI is all it's cracked up to be.
