A Growing Crisis
Texas is witnessing a surge in abandoned babies, with the number more than doubling compared to a decade ago. This alarming trend is attributed to the state's restrictive abortion laws implemented in 2021, coupled with limited access to prenatal care.
The situation is particularly concerning in Houston, where police have identified parents in only four out of six abandonment cases this year. One of the identified individuals, Everilda Cux-Ajtzalam, an 18-year-old Guatemalan woman, faces felony child abandonment charges.
Cux-Ajtzalam's case highlights the desperation and lack of awareness surrounding safe haven options. She claimed limited sex education and was unaware of her pregnancy until seven months after being raped by a relative. Fear of deportation due to her migrant status prevented her from seeking help at a clinic.
The Washington Post investigation reveals that most parents who abandon their babies are facing dire circumstances. Despite this, Texas lawmakers have not allocated funds towards raising awareness and preventing such incidents.
Instead, the state has prioritized funding crisis pregnancy centers, which have been criticized for misleading vulnerable women seeking help into carrying unwanted pregnancies. This approach stands in stark contrast to other states that have invested in awareness campaigns and hotlines to address child abandonment.
While Texas has recently legalized Safe Haven Baby Boxes, their effectiveness remains uncertain. The high cost of installation and the recent discovery of an abandoned baby in a dumpster after a box was installed raise concerns about their practicality.
The rising number of abandoned babies in Texas underscores the need for comprehensive solutions that address the root causes of this issue. Expanding access to prenatal care, providing accurate information about safe haven options, and investing in support services for vulnerable mothers are crucial steps towards protecting both mothers and their newborns.

Blaming the victims is despicable. These mothers are facing unimaginable situations, often involving trauma and lack of support. We need to address the root causes, not criminalize them.

Texas needs to take responsibility for its actions. These abandoned babies are the victims of a political agenda that prioritizes ideology over human life.

We need to address the root causes of poverty and lack of access to healthcare that contribute to these situations. But we also need to provide immediate solutions for babies in danger.

Every life is precious. We need to do everything we can to prevent these tragedies and ensure that all babies have a chance to live.
