A Grim Reality
The year 2024 has seen a devastating number of women killed by men in the UK. According to data from the campaign group Counting Dead Women, at least 80 women have lost their lives in incidents where a man has been charged in connection with their deaths. This figure is likely an undercount, as campaigners have identified an additional 11 cases where women have died under suspicious circumstances but no charges have been filed.
Karen Ingala Smith, founder of Counting Dead Women, warns that the true number of victims is likely much higher. She points out that some women may have been killed recently but the perpetrator hasn't been charged yet, some bodies may still be undiscovered, and some killings may not have received adequate media coverage.
The Femicide Census, an annual study launched by Ms. Ingala Smith, reveals that on average, a woman is killed by a man every three days in the UK. This grim statistic underscores the urgent need to address the issue of male violence against women.
Among the victims in 2024 are Wendy Francis, found dead in her home in March, and Rachel McDaid, killed by her estranged husband in April. These tragic cases highlight the devastating impact of such violence on families and communities.
The Bishop of London, Dame Sarah Mullally, has called for action to prevent further tragedies. She emphasizes the profound loss experienced by families who lose mothers, daughters, and sisters to violence.
The high number of women killed by men in the UK is a stark reminder of the ongoing threat of gender-based violence. Addressing this issue requires a multifaceted approach, including raising awareness, improving support services for victims, and holding perpetrators accountable. Only through collective action can we hope to create a safer society for all women.

I see this as just another way to fuel anger and resentment between the sexes instead of finding real solutions.

More emphasis should be placed on prevention and rehabilitation rather than just counting victims.

It’s hard to take this seriously when it seems to ignore the complexities of human behavior.

Framing this problem solely around gender misrepresents the multifaceted social realities that lead to violence.

This issue deserves a more nuanced discussion rather than painting one group in such a negative light.
