New Driving Test Rules Announced to Reduce Waiting Times
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has announced new rules for driving tests in an effort to reduce waiting times and help drivers get on the road faster. These changes are part of a seven-step plan to improve the current system.
One key change is a review and improvement of the booking system, aiming to make it more efficient and user-friendly. Currently, the average waiting time for a driving test in England is 21 weeks, but it can often reach six months or more.
To address this issue, the DVSA will also be recruiting 450 additional driving examiners across the country. This will increase the availability of tests and hopefully reduce waiting times.
Furthermore, the period for changing or cancelling a test without losing money will be extended from three to ten working days. This is intended to discourage late cancellations and free up more slots for other learners.
The DVSA is also calling for evidence on how to prevent candidates from being ripped off by third parties who buy up test slots and resell them at inflated prices.
These measures are a significant step towards tackling the long driving test wait times and ensuring that learner drivers have a fair and efficient system for booking their tests.

What kind of evidence are they looking for to prevent third-party gouging? It's just another empty promise.

More changes won't fix the root problem; we need a complete overhaul of the driving test system.

As someone who's been through the system, I’m glad to see the DVSA acknowledging the problems and trying to fix them.

Every little step counts! I really believe this plan will create a better experience for future drivers.

Extending the cancellation period only helps those who can afford to waste time. What about the long-term effects on people who actually need the test?

Kudos to the DVSA for responding to the needs of learner drivers. Excited to see these changes in action!

If this means getting my driving test sooner rather than later, then I fully support these new rules!

I think extending the cancellation policy is fair. It allows for more flexibility while freeing up slots for others.
