A Booming Industry Creates New Career Opportunities

The Rise of Pet-Related Professions in China

Li Yabin's story is a testament to the growing pet industry in China. After losing her beloved dog, she decided to pursue a career in pet care, driven by a desire to help other pet owners. She enrolled in professional courses covering pet grooming, training, and healthcare, aiming to start her own business in the near future.

Li is not alone. The 2025 China Pet Industry White Paper reports that the number of pet dogs and cats in urban areas has reached 124 million, with a market value exceeding $41 billion. This surge in pet ownership has fueled the emergence and boom of pet-related professions.

Favor Pets, a Beijing-based chain brand dedicated to pet-related vocational training, has witnessed a significant rise in trainees, cultivating over 30,000 pet groomers, 4,000 pet trainers, and 500 pet healthcare technicians. Yan Jinsheng, vice-president of China Pet Industry Association, highlights the increasing demand for professional knowledge and certifications in this competitive and rapidly evolving field.

The pet healthcare profession, in particular, holds immense potential. Yan emphasizes the growing need for non-invasive treatments like massage and exercise to help pets regain function and mobility. With the rising number of pets in China, the demand for healthcare services is expected to skyrocket.

Pet trainers are also experiencing a surge in demand. They are now required to possess expertise in pet mental health, relationship maintenance, and social interaction training, going beyond traditional behavioral training. Qian Di, head of Your Hakimi, a Shanghai-based company specializing in training pet handlers, observes a growing number of pet owners seeking training for their furry companions.

Wang Yan, a former financial accountant, recently transitioned to become a certified pet trainer. She actively participates in pet-themed activities and witnesses firsthand the increasing demand for pet training. She is confident in the promising future of her new profession.

The flourishing pet-related professions enrich the pet service market and address the evolving needs of pet owners. However, challenges remain, such as a shortage of skilled professionals and unclear industry certification standards. Wu Yi, an associate professor at China Agricultural University, emphasizes the need for strengthened professional training and education, along with government policies and industry guidance to standardize market practices and promote the healthy development of these professions.

Shouldn't pet owners be taking care of their own furry friends instead of relying on professionals?

I can't believe people are paying for pet massage. Isn't that something you can do at home for free?

More professionals in the pet industry means better care and more options for pet owners.

Another sign of our society's obsession with consuming, even when it comes to something as basic as caring for pets.

The focus on pet health care ignores the issue of animal overpopulation. We need to address the root cause, not just the symptoms.

So people are making a living off our furry friends? Seems unnecessary, they're just pets, not royalty.
