Respiratory Infections on the Rise in China
As winter approaches in China, the number of acute respiratory infections is increasing, particularly among children. This rise is attributed to several factors, including increased time spent indoors, reduced respiratory protection in cold temperatures, and the waning immunity from previous infections.
The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) reported that influenza, rhinovirus, and mycoplasma pneumoniae are the three most prevalent respiratory illnesses nationwide. While infections caused by rhinovirus and mycoplasma pneumoniae are trending downward, influenza positivity rates are significantly higher compared to previous weeks.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a common cause of cold-like symptoms, is also on the rise among children under the age of 4. Additionally, infections caused by human metapneumovirus are increasing among children and teenagers under the age of 14.
The China CDC warns that infected individuals are contagious from the end of the incubation period to the acute phase. The duration of immune protection after recovery is relatively short, which increases the likelihood of recurrent infections.
Recommendations for Prevention and Treatment
The China CDC recommends that individuals experiencing fever or other symptoms of respiratory infections rest at home. Students and school faculty members are also advised to stay home if they are feeling unwell.
Individuals with weakened immune systems are encouraged to get vaccinated against influenza, COVID-19, and pneumococcal disease.
If children exhibit symptoms such as breathing difficulties or persistent fever, they should be taken to a hospital immediately.
To curb the spread of these viruses, the China CDC recommends expanding vaccination coverage, maintaining good hygiene practices, and ensuring proper ventilation in indoor spaces.

The best way to stay healthy is to strengthen your immune system, not to follow panic-driven advice.

Seems like a ploy to push more vaccinations. This has the potential to do more harm than good.

The article creates unnecessary fear. Children get sick every winter; it's part of growing up.
