Greenland's Leader Rejects Trump's Acquisition Comments
Greenland's Prime Minister, Mute Egede, firmly rejected President-elect Donald Trump's recent comments regarding the "ownership and control" of Greenland. Egede emphasized that Greenland is not for sale and will never be for sale, stating that the island's long struggle for freedom must not be lost.
Trump's statement, made on the social media platform Truth Social, declared that the United States feels the "ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity" for national security and global freedom. He did not elaborate further on this statement.
This is not the first time Trump has expressed interest in acquiring Greenland. In 2019, he proposed buying the island, a proposal that was swiftly rejected by both Denmark and Greenland's authorities. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the offer "absurd," leading Trump to cancel a planned visit to Copenhagen.
Greenland, a semi-autonomous part of Denmark, is strategically important for the U.S. military due to its Pituffik air base and its location on the shortest route from Europe to North America. The island also boasts mineral, oil, and natural gas wealth, although development has been slow.
Since 2009, Greenland has held the right to declare independence from Denmark. However, the island, with a population of around 56,000, has so far refrained from doing so, relying on significant budget transfers from Copenhagen each year.
Trump's recent statement has sparked outrage among Danish and Greenlandic officials. Rasmus Jarlov, a member of parliament for the opposition Conservative Party, stated that the Danish government must clearly state that control over Greenland is not up for discussion or negotiation. He also emphasized that any U.S. activities aimed at taking control of Danish territory must be prohibited and countered.
The Danish government and the prime minister's office have not yet commented on Trump's statement.

Get over yourself, Trump! Greenland belongs to its people, not to the U.S. government.

Does Trump think his money can buy anything? Some things are simply not for sale!
