Israeli Prime Minister Declares Collapse of UN-Monitored Buffer Zone with Syria

On Sunday, during a visit to Mount Bental, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, which was monitored by the United Nations and established a demilitarized area between Israel and Syria, has officially ended. The announcement came as Netanyahu, accompanied by Defense Minister Israel Katz, observed the situation from a strategic location overlooking the Syrian border.

Netanyahu attributed the collapse of the Assad regime to a series of events that have affected the entire region, stating that it has created both significant opportunities and serious risks for Israel. He emphasized his directive for Israeli forces to enter the former buffer zone, asserting their presence to prevent any hostile groups, particularly Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, from gaining a foothold near the border. "We will not allow any hostile force to establish itself on our border," he stated firmly.

Additionally, Netanyahu outlined Israel's commitment to monitor the evolving circumstances closely and to take necessary actions to safeguard the country's borders and security. He also expressed an interest in fostering a cooperative relationship with Syria. Defense Minister Katz echoed this sentiment, instructing the Israel Defense Forces to secure strategic locations within the buffer zone for the protection of all Israeli communities in the Golan Heights, including both Jewish and Druze populations, against potential threats from across the border.

The announcement follows an escalation in Israeli military operations in Syria, particularly after conflicts with Hezbollah in Lebanon last October, with Israel claiming to target Iranian and Hezbollah-affiliated militant groups and their activities within Syrian territory.

By entering the buffer zone, Israel undermines the UN's authority and role in maintaining peace in the region. This blatant disregard for the international order sets a dangerous precedent.

Netanyahu's government is using the conflict for political gain, sacrificing peace and stability for their own narrow interests. This blatant disregard for human life is unacceptable.

The Israeli government claims to act in self-defense, but their actions are fueling the very conflict they claim to fear. This militaristic approach only perpetuates violence and instability in the region.

Israel remains committed to pursuing a peaceful resolution to the conflict, but it cannot remain vulnerable to attacks from across the border. The buffer zone serves as a vital security buffer.
