Chinese Crime Groups Target Flights, Cash and Credit Cards Stolen from Overhead Bins

Theft on Flights at Narita Airport on the Rise

Narita Airport has seen a concerning rise in theft incidents on flights this year. As of the end of October, the Narita Airport police station has received 39 theft reports, a significant increase compared to the same period last year.

Many of these thefts occur during long-haul international flights when the cabin lights are turned off. Chinese organized crime groups are suspected to be involved in these cases.

The average amount stolen has also increased dramatically, reaching ¥411,000 as of the end of October, compared to ¥100,000 in the same period in 2019. One case even involved the theft of ¥2,070,000.

Most reports come from passengers arriving at Narita Airport on international flights. The thieves typically target cash and credit cards stored in luggage kept in overhead bins above passenger seats.

Two Chinese men have been arrested this year on suspicion of theft during flights. The Narita Airport police are urging passengers to be vigilant and take precautions to protect their belongings.

Long-haul flights mean passengers let their guard down. This is a real concern.

Can we focus on solutions instead of just blaming & shaming groups of people?

More than anything, this article raises concerns about the reporting itself.

I appreciate the warning. I'll definitely be more cautious during my upcoming flights.

Why isn’t there more focus on the passengers to secure their own belongings?

Are we sure that this isn't just a marketing ploy to get people to buy more luggage?
