Iranian Hackers Target US Political Campaigns Ahead of Elections
Iranian hackers are actively targeting individuals associated with American political campaigns in an attempt to undermine confidence in the upcoming US elections. This warning comes from the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), who urge politicians and their teams to strengthen their cybersecurity defenses.
The hackers, believed to be operating under the direction of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, are targeting personal and business email accounts, often impersonating professional contacts to steal login credentials and passwords. This tactic was previously used in a hack-and-leak operation aimed at disrupting the campaign of former President Donald Trump.
US officials have charged three Iranian individuals with using these tactics to compromise the email accounts of a former State Department official, a former presidential Homeland Security advisor, and at least two former CIA officials.
While Iranian officials have repeatedly denied US accusations of election meddling, US intelligence officials remain concerned about their activities. They believe Iran is focusing on aiding the presidential campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris, primarily by attempting to damage Trump's reelection bid.
Previous intelligence assessments have also accused Iran of using artificial intelligence to create social media posts and fake news articles designed to incite anger and division among voters ahead of the election.
In addition to targeting political campaigns, Iranian actors have also attempted to infiltrate US groups protesting Israeli actions in Gaza. They have posed as activists online, encouraging protests and even offering financial support.
With the November 5th election approaching, US officials are urging vigilance and caution against these cyber threats. They emphasize the importance of strong cybersecurity measures and encourage individuals and organizations associated with national political organizations or campaigns to review and implement necessary security actions.
