Tropical Storm Milton Threatens Florida's West Coast
Tropical Storm Milton has formed in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before making landfall on Florida's west coast. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warns of "life-threatening impacts" and urges residents to prepare.
Milton is currently located 245 miles north of Veracruz, Mexico, and is moving north-northeast at 3 mph. It is expected to undergo rapid intensification and become a hurricane by Sunday night. By Monday and Tuesday, it will move across the south-central Gulf before reaching Florida's west coast by midweek.
This news comes just over a week after Hurricane Helene devastated Florida and the Southeast, killing at least 229 people and causing immense destruction. President Biden visited Florida's Big Bend, where Helene struck as a Category 4 storm, and pledged billions of dollars for rebuilding efforts.
In preparation for Milton, Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in 35 Florida counties. The Hollywood, Florida mayor also declared a state of emergency for the city. FEMA has hundreds of staff already in Florida assisting with Helene recovery who will also help prepare for Milton.
The NHC warns of heavy rain, storm surge, and flooding risks across the Florida Peninsula and the Florida Keys. Residents are urged to have a hurricane plan in place, follow the advice of local officials, and stay updated on the latest forecasts.
