Chinese President Xi Jinping held a meeting with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on August 29, 2024. This meeting was part of a broader effort between China and the US, the world's two largest economies, to enhance strategic dialogue and address key issues in their relationship, particularly in commerce and climate. Experts emphasize the importance of both nations steering their relationship away from escalating tensions, aiming for a more pragmatic approach.

During the meeting, President Xi emphasized that in the current turbulent global environment, it is crucial for countries to promote unity and collaboration rather than engage in division or confrontation. He underscored that both countries should be accountable for delivering stability and fostering common development. Xi reaffirmed China’s dedication to maintaining a stable and cooperative relationship with the US while respecting its sovereignty, security, and developmental interests.

Sullivan's visit also included meetings with high-ranking Chinese officials, such as China's chief diplomat Wang Yi and military vice chairman Zhang Youxia, indicating China's willingness to engage in diplomatic and military discussions. Following Sullivan's departure, the two nations' commercial and trade teams are scheduled to convene in Tianjin, with significant meetings lined up to discuss further cooperation.

In addition, a meeting is planned between US climate advisor John Podesta and China’s climate change envoy Liu Zhenmin in early September, showcasing a commitment to tackling climate issues jointly. Analysts suggest that maintaining open channels of communication is vital to avoid miscalculations, especially with important international events on the horizon like the G20 Summit and the APEC meeting.

Wang Yi and Sullivan engaged in extensive discussions over two days, tackling sensitive issues regarding Taiwan, human rights, and economic relations. Despite some cautious optimism about potential improvements in people-to-people exchanges, experts remain skeptical about significant changes as long as the US continues its containment strategy towards China. Ultimately, maintaining a foundation for pragmatic engagement remains the primary goal amidst ongoing tensions.
